Warning To Everyone On Gov Takeover and Farmland
The Netherlands will start buying out farmers’ businesses at between 100-120% of their appraised value. This plan was approved by the European Union on Tuesday as part of a plan to cut nitrogen emissions in half by 2030.
Farmers who agree to this buy-out will not be able to start up their businesses elsewhere. By taking the money, they agree that the “closure of their production capacity is definite and irreversible and that they will not start the same breeding activity elsewhere in the Netherlands or within the EU.”
The Netherlands is one of the world’s largest agricultural producers, second only to the U.S.
On Tuesday, the governing arm of the European Union officially threw its support behind plans by the Dutch government to buy out thousands of farmers from their lands in order to meet the EU’s Natura 2000 scheme to protect certain environments.
A key part of the Dutch strategy involves buying up and halting work at farms responsible for large-scale emissions of nitrogen. However, that required confirmation from the European Commission that the buyouts do not amount to state aid that is banned under EU rules.
Margrethe Vestager, executive vice-president in charge of competition policy, said in a statement that the two schemes approved would clear the way for the “voluntary closure” of farms responsible for major nitrogen emissions.
Farmers have held several large demonstrations, blocking highways and supermarket warehouses last year to protest against the reforms that they cast as a threat to their way of life.
