A concerned father approached a man at Starbucks, and asked him to stop vaping near his daughter, but was met with a deadly response.
Father Protects Daughter But Pays a Devastating Price
37-year-old Paul Stanley Schmidt was fatally stabbed while in the presence of his 3-year-old daughter Erica.
According to Kathy Schmidt, the mother of Paul Stanley Schmidt, he and his daughter Erica were waiting outside a Vancouver coffee shop at approximately 5:30 p.m on Sunday, while his fiancée, Ashley Umali, was inside ordering beverages.
A disturbing video uploaded on social media documented the harrowing moment when Schmidt was unexpectedly stabbed.
The footage showed him holding onto his stomach as he stumbled and collapsed to the ground, leaving him in a pool of blood.
According to Schmidt, she was informed that the perpetrator, identified as 32-year-old Inderdeep Singh Gosa, committed the heinous assault as her son had requested him not to vape in front of Erica.
Victim’s Mother Speaks Out
“This is so horribly wrong what happened. He was just trying to protect his daughter. I’m angry and I’m sad,” she told the news outlet.
“It all started because he was vaping beside the baby. Ashley’s in shock — she watched the whole thing. She’s so devastated,” Schmidt added.
Warning: This is a very graphic video, viewer discretion is advised.
Gosa is facing second-degree murder charges, however, Schmidt expressed her desire for the charges to be elevated to first-degree, which necessitates the establishment of premeditation.
“What kind of world are we living in when you take your family to Starbucks in the middle of the afternoon and you’re attacked and killed, with many people standing around videotaping and watching?” she said.
Police Are Asking for Citizen’s Help
Police have only said that an officer on patrol was flagged down about 5:40 p.m. at Granville and West Pender streets after the stabbing, which followed a “brief altercation.”
He said police are appealing for more witnesses and video to help investigators determine a motive in the senseless killing.
“There’s a significant amount of evidence to tell us what happened. What we are focusing on now is why did this happen. What are the events that transpired in the moments leading up to this very serious crime,” Addison said.
