Gov. Candidate Stacey Abrams Says “There is no such thing as a heartbeat at six weeks”

Georgia's Democrat gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams said a six weeks old fetus does not have a heartbeat and is a "manufactured" sound.

Georgia’s Democrat gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams said a six week old fetus does not have a heartbeat and is a “manufactured” sound.

Stacey Abrams Confused About a Fetal Heartbeat?

At a campaign event at the Ray Charles Performing Arts Center in Atlanta on Wednesday, Democrat Stacey Abrams said, “There is no such thing as a heartbeat at six weeks. It is a manufactured sound designed to convince people that men have the right to take control of a woman’s body.”

Fetal Heartbeat

Abrams’ controversial statement about the fetus’s heartbeat may have been referring to Georgia’s legislation, the Living Infants Fairness and Equality (Life) Act, that bans abortions as early as six weeks or after a fetal heartbeat is detected. The bill was signed into law by Gov. Brian Kemp, includes exceptions for rape and incest, and allows for later abortions when the mother’s life is at risk, or there is a serious medical condition.

Fox News reported that “Planned Parenthood’s current website states that between the fifth and sixth week of pregnancy, “A part of the embryo starts to show cardiac activity,” though it claims it’s not a fully formed heart. “It sounds like a heartbeat on an ultrasound, but it’s not a fully-formed heart — it’s the earliest stage of the heart developing,” reads its guide to pregnancy notes.”

NPR also stated that valves for a heartbeat don’t exist, “At six weeks of gestation, those valves don’t exist,” she explains. “The flickering that we’re seeing on the ultrasound that early in the development of the pregnancy is actually electrical activity, and the sound that you ‘hear’ is actually manufactured by the ultrasound machine.”

Websites aimed toward mothers-to-be state that a heartbeat can begin anywhere between 4 to 6 weeks. Here are a few examples quoted from the respective websites:

  • American Pregnancy Association: After about 6 weeks, your baby’s heartbeat can be detected with an ultrasound.
  • Parents: By your 6th week of pregnancy, your baby’s heartbeat measures 150-160 beats per minute, which is about twice your heart rate.
  • Pampers: A tiny heartbeat of about 105 beats per minute may be detectable in an ultrasound this week, and the brain and nervous system are also developing quickly.

Stacey Abrams

Stacy Abrams, who has been hailed as an extreme liberal, was raised in Gulfport, Mississippi, is one of six children and a daughter of United Methodist ministers. Abrams attended DeKalb County public schools, graduated from Avondale High School, and has degrees from Spelman College, LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas, and Yale Law School.

The democrat governor candidate campaigned for Georgia’s Governor in 2018 and lost to Brian Kemp by 55,000 votes – she still has not conceded. Abrams says she did not lose the race because the election was plagued by voter suppression and “was not a free and fair election.”

Her fight against “voter suppression” pushed her to lead staffers in 20 competitive states to set up “voter protection” programs. The program did not openly disclose who was bankrolling the program.

Abrams’ campaign website notes she wants to expand reproductive rights and veto legislation that may further restrict abortion rights, and would also appeal the six-week abortion ban.

An Axios report indicated that the candidate for governor is supported mostly by out-of-state donors like California.

The Hill reported two days ago that Brian Kemp (R-GA), the current Governor of Georgia, had an 8-point lead over Abrams, as also reported by Real Clear Politics.
