Earlier this week, a two-hour Michigan school board meeting took place, where Kesha Hamilton, a school board member, stood by her statements that white people are more dangerous than animals.
In December, Hamilton boldly tweeted out: “Whiteness is so evil. it manipulates then says, I won’t apologize for my dishonesty and trauma-inducing practices and thinks you should applaud it for being honest about its ability to manipulate and be dishonest.”
She went on to claim: “The last thing you have to worry about is an animal – though that could be a very real threat.. more dangerous are any whites you may see on the trail.. be safe!”
During the nearly two hours of public comment at the January 17 meeting people called Hamilton’s social media comments “appalling” and “disgraceful,” while others called Hamilton an “agent of change” who holds the district accountable.
Hamilton did not apologize for her comments.
You can watch her public announcement about her “white people” comment, below.
One supporter Myeshia Jones said “Whiteness is the system, the ideology, the belief, the thought that because your skin is white, you are superior to Black people,” Jones said. “Because your skin is white you deserve better. Because your skin is white, you have better opportunities.”
Hamilton works as a racial equity consultant with Diverse Minds Consulting LLC, has spoken out as a school board member on several occasions regarding district policies and practices she views as biased, discriminatory or racist, including its attendance/tardy policy and its criteria for selecting a valedictorian.
She also is the chair of the City of Jackson’s Racial Equity Commission.
