Religious Debate At Gas Station Leads to Stabbing

A religious debate led to a man getting stabbed in Flagler County, the sheriff’s office says.

According to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, at around 10:30 p.m., two men rode their electric bicycles from a residence to a Circle K gas station, where they encountered a man sitting at a picnic bench.

The men struck up a conversation and then the topic turned to religion, FCSO says. The suspect, identified as Hunter Detherow, 22, became upset, and the conversation suddenly became a heated debate.

The men told deputies that Detherow began to hit one of them, and as the other tried to de-escalate the situation, he was suddenly stabbed.

Deputies say Dehterow fled on foot through a wooden area behind the Circle K following the fight. Both of the victims rode their bike electric bicycles back to the residence and proceeded to call 911.

Upon arrival, deputies found the stabbed man holding a bloody cloth over his neck.

Deputies provided life-saving measures to prevent blood loss until Flagler County Fire Rescue arrived to take the man to Halifax Hospital for medical treatment.

Deputies began to search for Detherow, but he wasn’t located, FCSO says.

At around 12:45 p.m. on March 18, Detherow was arrested at his home on Forsythe Lane. He faces charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
