A schoolgirl has died after she leaned out of a bus window to wave to friends and hit her head on a concrete pole.
The Tragic Story
Brazilian media reported that the freak accident occurred last week after Fernanda Pacheco Ferraz, 13, left Rio de Janeiro’s Professor Carlos Côrtes State College, where she studied, to get to her home in the Catarcione neighborhood in Brazil.
Tragedy struck after the teen, sitting at the back of the bus at the time, decided to lean her out the window of the moving bus to say goodbye to her friends.
The bus traveled along a narrow, two-way street and attempted to swerve away from cars parked on the right side as the schoolgirl tried to wave at her classmates on a sidewalk.
Passengers informed the bus driver of the accident, prompting him to stop the vehicle.
The fire department responded to an emergency call and declared Pacheco dead on the scene.
Pacheco was laid to rest following a private funeral service Thursday.
The bus company released a statement to express their “regret at the unexpected and tragic incident” and vowed to assist the authorities with the investigation.
