A Chinese government state media commentator warned if Nancy Pelosi flies to Taiwan with US Military they may shoot down her plane.
Pelosi Might Be In Danger
Speaker of the House (D) and life-long politician Nancy Pelosi is considering visiting Taiwan during her trip this weekend to Singapore, Japan, and South Korea.
According to reports, a Chinese state media commentator of the Global Times suggested that Beijing could shoot down any US military plane she takes to Taipei, and if it’s accompanied by US military aircraft.
Experts say China’s government warned it will take “forceful measures” if Nancy Pelosi visits Taiwan after the Financial Times reported she may travel to the Chinese-claimed island nation.
On Friday, after CNN Breaking News posted a tweet about Pelosi’s plans, a Chinese state-affiliated media Twitter user sent this warning, which has since been deleted. We were able to obtain a copy before it was taken down by Twitter for “violations.”
Why Is Pelosi Going To Asia?
Pelosi framed the trip as part of an attempt to involve Congress in the Biden administration’s efforts to build closer ties between the US and Asia.
In a press conference, Pelosi said, “We have global responsibilities, whether it comes to three things, I would say: security, economy and governance. And this will be part of that. Thank you all.”
Earlier this week, Chinese leader Xi Jinping warned President Biden during a 137-minute phone call “not to play with fire” over Taiwan.
During the discussion, Xi warned Biden that “those who play with fire will perish by it,” according to Beijing’s Foreign Ministry.
Pelosi’s Past with China
This isn’t the first time Nancy Pelosi wasn’t welcome by the Chinese. In the video below, you will see Pelosi and other officials visiting China, paying their respects to pro-democracy activists from two years before their visit.
At the time, in September 1991, Pelosi represented the 5th district of California. Take a look:
Then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich made a trip to Taiwan in 1997 – Pelosi would be the highest-ranking American elected official to visit the island since.
