A six-year-old girl died after being accidentally struck by the propeller of a boat her mom was driving in an Arizona lake.
Here’s What Happened
According to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, a 6-year-old girl died in Arizona in a horrific boating accident Friday after her mother struck the child with a boat propeller on Friday.
Twelve people from two families had been on a boat since 7 a.m. on Lake Pleasant, Arizona. At 11 a.m., one of the families called 911 to report the boat’s propeller had hit their young daughter.
“Witnesses at the scene confirmed that the child’s mother was operating the boat when she began to drive and, unbeknownst to the family, the child had somehow entered the water,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
“The father of the child was in the water holding onto a wakeboard when he noticed someone in the water and swam to the child.”
The mother, Camille, accelerated as she attempted to pull another member of the family wakeboarding but ran over Sunni.
Sgt Joaquin Enriquez said: “He and the mother quickly realized their daughter was in the water and had suffered a leg amputation from the boat’s propeller.
Police confirmed that her mother, Camille, 32, was not believed to be ‘impaired’ at the time of the incident and the family were ‘experienced boaters.’
Sources close to the family say they are “devastated” by the loss of Sunni.
In her obituary, Sunni was called a “bright and beautiful light in so many people’s lives.”
Sunni is survived by her parents, Camille and Blake Wasden, and her brothers, Tucker and Dieter.
