The White House was temporarily closed on Sunday evening around 6 pm after Secret Service agents discovered a white powder substance suspected to be cocaine.
White Powder Discovered In White House
President Biden and his family were away at Camp David when a uniformed Secret Service agent patrolling the West Wing found a white substance.
Emergency response workers conducted an initial test of the white substance and determined it was cocaine.
The findings prompted a brief shutdown of some White House campuses as response workers assessed whether the substance was hazardous.
An Investigation is Launched
The DC Fire Department was called to evaluate and quickly determined the item to be non-hazardous.
“The item was sent for further evaluation, and an investigation into the cause and manner of how it entered the White House is pending,” the White House said in a statement.
Following the package’s discovery, a hazmat team was called to the area of 18th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue.
Secret Service units blocked off roads around the White House following the incident.
The White Substance Tested Positive For Cocaine
A fire department and emergency medical services field test Sunday evening identified a “yellow bar, meaning cocaine, hydrochloride” after a dispatch at 8:49 p.m., according to a publicly available encrypted call recording.
Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the Secret Service, said the substance was in a “work area of the West Wing.”
Guglielmi stated that another dispatch said the substance found in the White House library was incorrect.
Normally members of the public who tour the White House are permitted to visit the East Wing and Residence.
Tour members aren’t permitted to visit the West Wing, where the president, vice president, and other senior administration officials are.
On Tuesday morning, Mr. Biden returned to the White House with several family members.
