On April 9th, a deadly house fire occurred in Byram, Mississippi, resulting in the death of two individuals and critical injuries to five others.
Here’s What Happened
The incident took place at approximately 7 pm, where firefighters responded to a call of a structure fire on Gary Drive. The residence was already engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, and they found several people outside with severe burns.
Emergency medical services arrived and treated the injured victims. While firefighters put out the blaze, they found 77-year-old Filiberto Torres deceased inside the residence.
The five injured victims were airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, and one person was taken to Baptist Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
One of the injured victims, 45-year-old Hose Thomas Segura Juarez, later died from his wounds. Byram Police identified Marcos Uriel Lara Perez as the person responsible for the incident.
The District Fire Marshal and Byram Police allege that Perez intentionally started the fire by throwing a bucket of gasoline on all the victims in the kitchen and igniting the flames with a BIC cigarette lighter.
The incident allegedly followed a verbal argument, and all the victims lived together in the home. Perez is currently hospitalized in a burn unit in Alabama, and he is facing two counts of capital murder and three counts of aggravated assault.
Three other victims remain hospitalized, and Perez may remain in the hospital for a while as he is unconscious. Byram Police Chief David Errington expressed his horror at the incident and described it as the worst traumatic event he has witnessed, aside from a car crash.
The investigation is ongoing, and further details will be provided as they become available.
