A newborn baby girl’s father was recently arrested after allegedly biting the baby after telling nurses she was ‘evil’.
Dad Bites Newborn Baby
A 24-year-old father from Indiana has been apprehended for allegedly biting his recently born daughter numerous times, causing “mouth-shaped bruises” and teeth imprints all over the baby’s physique.
According to court documents reviewed by Law&Crime, Gavan Rogers was arrested on Tuesday and has been charged with two felonies: one count of neglect of a dependent resulting in bodily injury and one count of domestic battery with bodily injury to a person under 14.
As per a probable cause affidavit acquired by The Lebanon Reporter, Rogers and the mother of the infant took their two-week-old daughter to Witham Hospital in Lebanon on November 3 for a routine examination.
Hospital employees allegedly found questionable bruising on the newborn’s forearms, stomach, shoulders, knee, and leg shortly after they arrived at the hospital.
The infant was transferred to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, and the Whitestown Police Department was notified by the hospital staff.
The Reporter states that a physician at the children’s hospital declared that the young girl seemed to have multiple bruises, some of which had noticeable teeth imprints.
Father Denies Wrongdoing
When asked about his daughter’s injuries, Rogers told hospital workers that he likely “open-mouth kissed” or “play bit” the infant with too much force, Indianapolis Fox affiliate WXIN reported. He reportedly told police he must have “nibbled too hard” on the child when she was fully clothed.
“These injuries could only have been inflicted while using excessive force, which would have caused severe pain to the [victim],” the affidavit reportedly states.
The detective documented “at least six” bite marks on the baby after examinination.
Per WXIN’s report, the detective discovered various nurses at Witham Hospital had filed concerning reports stating they overheard Rogers addressing the newborn as “evil” and referring to her as a “little b—-” and “ungrateful” while the infant was in the neonatal intensive care unit following her birth.
Rogers Home Life
According to sources, Rogers mentioned during an interview with a detective from the Whitestown police that he had been residing with the infant and her mother in Whitestown for the past two weeks.
His usual place of dwelling was with his parents in Greencastle, situated about 50 miles southwest of Whitestown.
Rogers is scheduled to appear before Boone County Judge Lori N. Schein for his initial hearing on Friday, court records show.
