A 34-year-old man broke into a Minnesota home, and before leaving, he helped himself to the home owners ice cream.
Criminal Had an ‘Ice Cream Break’ After Breaking In
An individual from Willmar, Minnesota is facing several charges following allegations of breaking into a residence and consuming the victim’s ice cream during the burglary.
Kevin Ray Wertz, a 34-year-old resident of Willmar, has been charged with two counts of first-degree burglary involving the possession of a dangerous weapon and committing the offense in an occupied dwelling. He has also been charged with theft related to his involvement in the incident, which occurred on January 29, 2023.
Law enforcement officials report that they received a call reporting a burglary at approximately 2:19 p.m. The incident occurred off 90th Ave. SE, in Fahlun Township, located in Kandiyohi County, which is approximately seven miles southeast of Willmar.
The suspect is said to have left the scene roughly five to ten minutes prior to the authorities’ arrival.
The perpetrator was described as an individual sporting a mustache, with a ski mask pulled below the mouth, and consuming ice cream during the burglary. The suspect is believed to have fled the scene in a four-door sedan with front driver’s side quarter panel damage.
Homeowners Were Napping At The Time of the Break In
Upon reaching the location, Deputy Sam King spoke with the homeowners, who stated they were taking an afternoon nap when the intruder, who was later identified as Wertz, entered their residence without permission.
As per the complaint, the homeowners suspect that Wertz entered their property through two unlocked doors in the entryway. He reportedly proceeded to pick up a .22 caliber revolver with a soft case and move some boxes of ammunition to access them. In addition, he helped himself to several ice cream bars from the freezer and also took a pair of binoculars.
After opening a third unlocked door to the kitchen, Wertz proceeded to the living room where he was confronted by the male homeowner. The homeowner instructed Wertz to leave the premises.
According to the charges, Wertz held the .22 caliber pistol under his right shoulder and remained in the living room eating an ice cream bar while the homeowner confronted him. However, the homeowner was unable to comprehend what Wertz was saying. Additionally, the homeowner suspected that Wertz might have been under the influence of drugs.
Weitz Was Wanted by Authorities Before This Break In
The charges state that while being escorted, Wertz halted at the door and shouted “boom” while gesturing as if he was attempting to frighten the homeowner.
As per the complaint, Wertz was attired in a black sweatshirt with the term “security” printed on the back, and a black ski mask which he pulled below his chin during the burglary.
The Meeker County authorities confirmed that the driver was indeed Wertz and upon arrest, he was found in possession of a .22 caliber pistol in his waistband along with a black sweatshirt with the term “security” printed on it.
The charges state that the homeowners later confirmed that Wertz was the perpetrator of the break-in.
Wertz has two previous outstanding warrants for his arrest.
