The D.C. city council now allow noncitizens and illegal aliens to vote in upcoming elections, if they lived in D.C. for at least 30 days.
Why Illegals Can Vote in the Nations Capitol
According to the Wall Street Journal, a Washington D.C. initiative that permits non-citizens, including undocumented immigrants and foreign diplomats, to participate in local elections has been enacted into law.
The Local Resident Voting Rights Amendment Act was passed by the City Council despite opposition from Republicans. Congress had a 30-day review period during which legislators could have tried to prevent the legislation from being implemented.
As reported by WAMU on Monday, the review period ended last week, indicating that the law has now been approved.
The House attempted to block the D.C. law from taking effect, but the Senate ran out of time before the review period came to a close.
The 30-Day Rule
Council member Charles Allen introduced the bill, which stipulates that a noncitizen who meets the eligibility criteria can vote in local elections if they have lived in Washington, D.C. for a minimum of 30 days.
Before the Oct. 6, 2022 vote, Allen stated, “This bill is consistent with our D.C. values and with the council’s tradition of expanding voting rights and embracing new perspectives in our political system and government. Our immigrant neighbors, regardless of their status, participate, contribute, and care about our community in our city.”
Fiery Pushback
The Republicans promptly attempted to thwart the enactment of the law. According to the provisions, eligible voters must be at least 18 years old by the time of the general election and must have resided in D.C. for a minimum of 30 days before the election without claiming voting residency in any U.S. state or territory.
In January, Rep. James Comer, R-K.Y., who serves as the House Oversight Committee Chairman, introduced a resolution denouncing the legislation.
Comer stated, “Voting is a fundamental aspect of American democracy and a constitutional right that must undoubtedly be safeguarded and upheld for citizens of this nation. The D.C. Council’s reckless decision to grant non-U.S. citizens and undocumented immigrants the right to vote in local elections is an attack on the cornerstone of this republic.”
As per WAMU, Congress has alternative ways to prevent the law from taking effect, such as prohibiting D.C. from using funds to implement it.
The council urged Senate Democrats this month to reject efforts to overturn the law.
A number of towns in Maryland also have laws on the books that allow noncitizens to vote in local elections, and some, such as Takoma Park and Hyattsville, also allow illegal immigrants to vote.
