Police in Texas detained former Navy SEAL Robert O’Neill this week, who alleges that he killed Osama bin Laden.
Here’s What Happened
Retired Navy SEAL Robert J. O’Neill, who claims to have fired the shots that killed Osama bin Laden, was arrested in Frisco, Texas this week, The Dallas Morning News reports.
O’Neill, 47, was arrested and booked into jail in Collin County, Texas on Wednesday. He was later released on a $3,500 bond later that same day. He did not respond to requests for comment.
Frisco police said in a written statement to the Morning News that O’Neill faces a Class A misdemeanor charge of assault causing bodily injury and a Class C misdemeanor charge of public intoxication. Jail records list only the assault charge, according to the newspaper.
According to law enforcement, “O’Neill faces a Class A misdemeanor charge of assault causing bodily injury and a Class C misdemeanor charge of public intoxication. Jail records list only the assault charge,” the newspaper said, noting the Tennessee resident was in the area Tuesday to record a podcast.
A few years after bin Laden’s death in 2011, O’Neill, a Montana native, said he was the one who fired the shots that killed the terrorist leader.
According to the News, he has received two Silver Stars, four Bronze Stars, and a Joint Service Commendation Medal.
The American government has never acknowledged or refuted O’Neill’s claim that he was responsible for the death of the famous Islamic terrorist.
O’Neill’s arrest in Texas is also by no means his first brush with scandal. Delta Airlines barred the vet in 2020 for “sticking to his guns” by refusing to wear a mask during the height of COVID-19.
The veteran is one of the backers of Armed Forces Brewing Co., a Virginia-based microbrewery that was established in the wake of the uproar over Bud Light’s support of transgender actor and activist Dylan Mulvaney, an LGBTQ+ influencer who President Biden invited to the White House in October 2022.
On Sunday, O’Neill informed his friends and followers in a tweet on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he was doing OK after being released from jail and was now concentrating on his fantasy football roster.
