Major wholesaler retailer Costco plans to open two new locations in China and one in Japan later this year.
Costco Makes A Stake In China
In contrast to many traditional overseas supermarkets facing business difficulties or withdrawing from the Chinese market due to e-commerce and worldwide inflation, Costco has decided to take its stake in China.
The bottom line: Costco seems serious about taking on Walmart’s Sam’s Club, which already has almost 40 stores in China.
Costco opened up its first store in Shanghai, China, in 2019, with approximately 200,000 members signed up in the first few months, surpassing its goal of 100,000. The second was opened in 2021 in Suzhou, and the third store opened on March 10 in Shanghai’s Pudong near the location of Disneyland Resort.
Apart from the Pudong store, they plan to open stores in Ningbo, Hangzhou, and Shenzhen.
First Day In China Was a Sucess
Below is footage of the chaotic day in 2019 at Costco’s opening day in Shanghai, which is almost like what Black Thursday used to be like in the US.
Fast forward to July 2023, and here’s what it looks like at the same Costco.
