The residents of the state of Massachusetts approved a new law allowing illegal aliens to obtain a U.S. driver’s license.
More States Allow Illegal Immigrants Drivers License
Since the new law’s approval, over 100,000 illegal immigrants have applied to obtain a driver’s license through the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles.
Massachusetts is now the 17th state to implement a new law that allows illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses and joins California, New York, and other states.
State officials believe by the end of the year over 300,000 illegal aliens will obtain driver’s licenses and the new law is set to cost taxpayers $28 million.
From the Massachusett government’s website:
Next month, immigrants in Massachusetts will be able to apply for a driver’s license regardless of their immigration status, thanks to the Work and Family Mobility Act,” said Lenita Reason, Executive Director of the Brazilian Worker Center and co-chair of Driving Families Forward. “The Driving Families Forward Coalition has been working with over 270 coalition partners to spread the message of this important moment. We are grateful to Governor Healey, her new administration, and the Registry of Motor Vehicles for all their hard work to ensure that community members receive the information necessary to successfully obtain a standard driver’s license starting on the first business day of implementation.”
The National Conference of State Legislatures said “These states—California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, Virginia and Washington—issue a license if an applicant provides certain documentation, such as a foreign birth certificate, foreign passport, or consular card and evidence of current residency in the state.”
Since 2020 these states approved for illegals to obtain driver’s licenses: Minnesota, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and Virginia.
Applicants in these states are only eligible to apply for state-issued driver’s licenses. They cannot get federally standardized REAL ID licenses, which people can use to fly or enter military bases. According to the law, these licenses cannot be used to vote in state or federal elections.
Applicants need proof of identity and date of birth, proof of residence in Massachusetts, and a Social Security number or an affidavit.
Florida will no longer accept driver’s licenses issued by some other U.S. states to immigrants living in the country illegally under a law signed by Governor Ron DeSantis as he seeks the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.
The Florida law, which took effect on July 1, is “the strongest anti-illegal immigration legislation in the country,” the governor’s office said in a press release on Wednesday.
The out-of-state licenses, designed specifically for unauthorized immigrants and deemed invalid by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, are from Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Rhode Island and Vermont.
