The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office says deputies got a call on June 2 about an assault at the Heritage Place Adult Living Center.
Investigators found that a man had been “beaten repeatedly in the head with a blunt object” by his roommate and suffered serious injuries.
WCNC Charlotte reports the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported assault at Heritage Place Living Center in Statesville a little before 9 p.m. on Friday, June 2.
Employees called 911 after they found a resident who had been assaulted by a roommate.
When deputies arrived, they found 69-year-old Mark Gray Leggette suffering from multiple injuries from the attack. Leggette was conscious then, but had been hit over the head with a blunt object, according to the sheriff’s office report.
Leggette was taken by ambulance to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
Leggette’s roommate, 61-year-old Greggory Gerald Warner, was taken into custody immediately. Multiple witnesses spoke with investigators about the incident, and detectives interviewed Warner.
He was charged with assault inflicting serious injury.
Leggette died in the hospital a few days later. When deputies learned that Leggette died as a result of the injuries, a warrant was issued against Warner for first-degree murder, which was served while he was still in jail.
According to the sheriff’s office, Warner is currently being held with a $20,000 bond.
