The US Department of Energy (DOE) has proposed new appliance rules that might lower water and energy use limits for dishwashers.
Biden Targets Dishwashers
The proposal aims to limit dishwashers to using only 3.2 gallons of water per cycle, which is considerably lower than the current federal limit of 5 gallons.
The rules would require manufacturers to reduce their products’ energy consumption by almost 30%.
It should be noted that most dishwashers already on the market are operating well below the federal standard, with the majority using 3.5 gallons of water per cycle or less.
Other Appliances Are On the Table
The DOE is considering stricter measures for other appliances such as washers, dryers, and refrigerators which could potentially impact performance, which manufacturers have expressed concerns about.
The Biden administration has been clear about the “need” for limits as part of the non-elected World Economic Forum’s new world agenda. In a statement earlier this year, the DOE wrote, “Collectively, these energy efficiency actions…support President Biden’s ambitious clean energy agenda to combat the climate crisis.”
The proposed rules come amid growing concerns over the use of gas stoves. Although top Democrats like Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer have downplayed these concerns, his own state recently banned gas stoves in all future buildings.
The ban will begin with new construction on small buildings in 2025 and gradually expand to larger buildings by 2028.
