A man from Boca Raton, Florida was arrested after delivering appliances to an elderly woman, then set her on fire.
Florida Man Murders Beloved 75-year-old Grandmother
A 24-year-old man was sentenced by a judge to two life sentences in prison for murdering a 75-year-old woman in 2019, setting her body on fire, after delivering appliances to her home.
In August 2019, Jorge Dupre Lachazo and another individual delivered a washer and dryer to the residence of Evelyn Smith Udell in Boca Raton, Florida, after being purchased from Best Buy.
After the appliances were installed, one of the workers exited the home and heard screams several minutes later. Upon re-entering the home, he found Udell lying on the floor and immediately contacted 911.
Lachazo fled in the delivery truck but was apprehended by a responding officer.
On April 5th, the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office stated that Jorge Dupre Lachazo was given a 30-year sentence in addition to his life sentences for murder and arson in the killing of Evelyn Udell.
According to the Palm Beach Post, Circuit Judge Daliah Weiss said at Lachazo’s sentencing, “This was a harmless woman in her mid-70s. A wife, a mother, a grandmother, a friend to so many people. A woman who had a life well lived with honor, full of love, compassion — anything that you’d want in a person. That much is clear.”
Victim Dies at Hospital
After being transported to the Delray Medical Center, she passed away the following day due to her wounds.
The Boca Raton Police discovered that Lachazo and another driver had delivered a washer and dryer from Best Buy to Udell’s home.
While the other driver went outside, Lachazo remained inside the home to provide instructions on how to use the new appliances. The driver heard screams and upon re-entering the home, he discovered Udell on the ground, covered in blood.
As the other driver called 911, Lachazo drove away. However, a responding Boca Raton Police officer spotted the delivery truck and halted it. Lachazo confessed to the officer that he had “hit the victim and splashed a chemical liquid on her.”
He also reportedly admitted to using marijuana and cocaine that day.
‘The Voices Made Me Do It’
According to The Palm Beach Post, Lachazo informed the police that voices had instructed him to murder Udell, but later changed his statement and claimed he was being blackmailed.
He reportedly told police when he was being arrested, “I’m a bad person. I want to die. Use that pistol already. Use it already. Disappear me.”
Udell’s son, Harran, told Lachazo at the sentencing hearing, “With any luck, the prison justice we see in movies will be visited upon you.”
Defense attorneys didn’t deny that Dupre Lachazo attacked the older woman, but they argued the slaying wasn’t premeditated or intentional.
