Tyson is closing poultry facilities located in Virginia and in Arkansas so they utilize other plants ‘more efficiently’.

Tyson Closes More Doors

As part of its efforts to simplify its U.S. poultry operations, Tyson Foods is shutting down two facilities that currently provide employment to over 1,600 individuals.

On Tuesday, Tyson Foods announced its intention to shut down its processing, broiler, and hatching operations located in Glen Allen, Virginia, as well as a plant in Van Buren, Arkansas.

The company has set May 12 as the date for the closure of both facilities.

More Effective Use of Facilities

Tyson Foods stated that the closures will enable the company to utilize the full capacity of its remaining plants more efficiently.

The company, which is based in Springdale, Arkansas, has announced that it will assist its 692 employees in Glen Allen and 969 employees in Van Buren in applying for available positions at other plants.

In addition to the recent plant closures, Tyson Foods has taken other measures to consolidate its operations.

Last October, the company revealed its plans to move 1,000 corporate employees from offices located in Illinois and South Dakota to Arkansas.

Lower Profits

Tyson Foods attributed some of the responsibility for its lower-than-anticipated profits during the fiscal first quarter that concluded on December 31 to operational inefficiencies.

The company stated that its operating income fell by 68% to $467 million during this period.

The parent company of Jimmy Dean and Ball Park products employs about 137,000 workers worldwide.
