A woman has been arrested by South Carolina authorities for abandoning nine puppies in a trash bag.
On February 27th, an animal cruelty investigator was dispatched to a wooded area in Pauline when a tree service company discovered a black trash bag that was moving and tied up.
Upon untying the bag, the investigator discovered a cardboard box inside containing nine puppies, of which only six were found to be alive. The puppies are estimated to have been around four weeks old at the time of their discovery.
After locating the suspect, Tara Elizabeth Johns, she confessed to the crime. She was subsequently arrested for animal abandonment and taken into custody at the Spartanburg County Detention Center.
“We would like to thank the tree service workers who did the right thing by reporting this incident and for going one step further by volunteering to care for the puppies,” the county posted on its Facebook page.
“In Spartanburg County, when it comes to individuals mistreating animals, everyone needs to be put on notice,” Environmental Enforcement Director Jamie Nelson said. “Environmental Enforcement Officers will investigate and utilize all available laws in our toolbox to seek justice.”
