Bed Bath & Beyond Closing 87 More Stores

Bed Bath & Beyond added more stores to its list of store closings, which previously included roughly 120 locations facing cuts.

Bed Bath & Beyond Has Seen Better Days

Bed Bath & Beyond has had a rocky road the past several years, which some analysts look to as a bellwether for other poorly performing retailers in similar spaces. The housewares giant reported a loss of about $393 million after sales plunged 33% for the quarter ending Nov. 26.

Bed Bath & Beyond Inc is also preparing to seek bankruptcy protection as soon as this week and has lined up liquidators to close additional stores unless a last-minute buyer emerges, four people familiar with the matter said on Monday.

Bed Bath & Beyond is negotiating a loan to help it navigate bankruptcy proceedings, with investment firm Sixth Street in talks to provide some funding, two of the people said. The firm loaned Bed Bath & Beyond $375 million last year.

That’s Not All

The retailer said it would close five buybuy Baby stores and all locations of its beauty store brand, Harmon. The retailer said the new closures expand an ongoing program to close 150 of its lowest-performing stores. It had previously announced the shuttering of 62 stores in September and 56 more in January.

The chain, once considered a category killer in home goods like dinnerware and small appliances, has lined up liquidators who are readying store closing sales that could be launched as soon as this weekend

No dates for the pending store closings were announced.

Union, New Jersey-based Bed Bath & Beyond also operates buybuy Baby and Harmon stores. The company said this week that five buybuy Baby locations and all Harmon stores would be closed.
