Full House star and Christian Candace Cameron Bure shook Hollywood with her announcement to leave Hallmark Movie Channel. The TV star said she would soon work with the Great American Family network, which focuses on traditional family values and aligns more with Bure’s values.

Born April 6, 1976, Bure is married to former professional hockey player Valerie (Val) Bure and is a mom to three kids in their 20’s.

Bure’s brother is well-known actor Kirk Cameron, who played “Mike Seaver” from the 80s hit show Growing Pains.

The Hallmark actress, who resides in Malibu, California, recently interviewed with the Wall Street Journal and shared what she’s been up to, and why she is leaving the Hallmark channel.

“I’ve had a very difficult year on a personal level, which has really shown me who my true friends are. From the loss of Bob this year,” Bure shared with the WSJ. “It felt like a lot of loss this year. When you have those friends that are there and show up; I’m grateful. I’m so grateful to my friends, my true friends, and my family, of course.”

Bure said God helped guide her through tough times.

Candace first told the Wall Street Journal about her decision to move to the conservative film network last Monday. “My heart wants to tell stories that have more meaning and purpose and depth behind them,” she said.

“I knew that the people behind Great American Family were Christians that love the Lord and wanted to promote faith programming and good family entertainment.”

Great American Family is a small network and isn’t included in many basic cable packages, isn’t on an exclusive streaming platform. According to the Wall Street Journal, the network draws about a fraction of Hallmark’s viewers.

Great American Media, established in 2021, is home to the family-friendly portfolio of brands Great American Family, Great American Living and Great American Adventures.

Great American Family is “America’s premiere destination for quality family-friendly programming, including original holiday movies, rom-coms and fan-favorite series that celebrate faith, family and country.  Great American Family is home to year-round seasonal celebrations including Great American Christmas, the network’s signature franchise featuring holiday themed movies and specials.”

Backlash About Christian Values

After the interview was published, many stars slammed her for the comments.

In a new interview with PEOPLE, actress JoJo Siwa, 19, said that she is likely not to speak to Candace again. “That’s what’s f—ked up,” she said. “You not liking gay marriage, do your thing girl. You being religious, do your thing girl. Of course, I would want everybody to do what they want to do. But to purposely exclude someone because of who they love, that’s sh—y.”

Hilarie Burton took to Twitter one week after calling out Bure to claim that ‘traditional values’ were to blame for the Colorado LGBT club shooting.

Candace also took to her own Instagram on Nov. 16 to release a statement on the backlash. She captioned the post, “From the heart” and said she has “great love and affection for all people.”

Cameron’s response:

“All of you who know me, know beyond question that I have great love and affection for all people. It absolutely breaks my heart that anyone would ever think I intentionally would want to offend and hurt anyone. It saddens me that the media is often seeking to divide us, even around a subject as comforting and merry as Christmas movies. But, given the toxic climate in our culture right now, I shouldn’t be surprised. We need Christmas more than ever,” she said.

“To the members of the media responsible for using this opportunity to fan flames of conflict and hate, I have a simple message: I love you anyway. To those who hate what I value and who are attacking me online: I love you. To those who have tried to assassinate my character: I love you. To everyone reading this, of any race, creed, sexuality, or political party, including those who have tried to bully me with name-calling, I love you,” Bure continued. “And in the sole motivation of pure love, I hope you’ll join me in sharing God’s hope for all the world this Christmas season. Call that my Christmas wish.”

Hallmark

The Hallmark Channel, owned by Hallmark Cards, Inc., is Hallmark Media’s flagship 24-hour cable television network, owned by Crown Media Holdings, in turn, owned by Hallmark Cards.

They are the country’s leading destination for “quality, feel-good entertainment, Hallmark Channel delivers on the 100-year legacy of the Hallmark brand”.

Bure commented in her interview that the network changed over the years becoase of the leadership, and that it’s not the same as when she first began working with the network.

According to reports, Hallmark is getting ready to release its first gay-led holiday film. Bure inferred that LGBTQ storylines will not be featured at her new home, sharing, “I think that Great American Family will keep traditional marriage at the core.”

“I want to be able to tell that story in a beautiful way, but also that is not off-putting to the unbeliever or someone who shares a different faith,” she said.
