Oprah Winfrey revealed that she underwent two knee replacement surgeries, and has a new appreciation for her body.
Oprah’s Knee Surgery
Oprah Winfrey, 63, disclosed to the public this week that she had left and right knee replacement surgery last year. The first operation was performed in August and the second one in November of last year.
Media mogul Winfrey was part of the “The Life You Want” Class on Gratitude with Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman published on October 11th. Kaufman is a humanistic psychologist, Columbia University professor, and host of “The Psychology Podcast.”
Oprah Winfrey is a part of the “The Life You Want” Class which teaches people how to live their best life possible. She covers topics like setting goals, living with intention, and finding your purpose. Oprah also provides guidance on how to deal with difficult situations and relationships.
Winfrey said in the Class interview, “I couldn’t lift my heel off the bed, and I vowed if I was ever able to get up, walk around and move again — that I would take advantage of movement, exercise and of being able to be fully in my body.”
“My appreciation for every organ and every limb has just expanded exponentially,” she told the Class and is motivating others to not take their bodies for granted and to also learn about knee replacements, even if you don’t need one.

Knee Replacement Surgeries
The first knee replacement surgery was in 1968.
Knee replacement surgery, also called knee arthroplasty, is a procedure to replace the weight-bearing surfaces of the knee joint to relieve pain and disability. It is usually considered for patients whose knees have been damaged by arthritis or injury.
During knee replacement surgery, surgeons remove the damaged cartilage and bone from your knee joint and replace it with new, artificial components. This new joint will restore the alignment and function of your knee so that you can once again enjoy activities like walking, biking, and swimming.
An artificial knee joint works by replacing the damaged or missing joint with an artificial one. The new joint is made of metal and plastic, and it is attached to the bones with screws or cement.
There is no telling when double knee replacement is performed when both knees are severely damaged and causing significant pain or disability. In some cases, a double knee replacement may be needed even if only one knee is causing problems if the other knee, the largest joint in the body, is also in poor condition.
