Cats are one of the most popular pets in the world and the most shared animals on social media and across the internet. Here are five things you probably didn’t know about furry felines.
1. Cats Can Run up to 30 Miles an Hour
Cats are pretty fast animals, so much so that they could probably beat a human athlete! Humans can run up to 22 miles per hour, but average humans don’t usually run that fast. An average housecat can run 30 miles per hour without hardly any training. However, these fast runners only show themselves when they “have to” run that fast.
2. Cats Were Used as Spies in 1960
The Central Intelligence Agency, or CIA, recruited cats to help them spy. After an hour-long procedure by a veterinary surgeon, the cat was transformed into an elite spy with a microphone implanted in her ear canal, and a small radio transmitter at the base of her skull. As if that wasn’t enough, the cat also was implanted with a thin wire antenna that was weaved into her long gray-and-white fur. It was called “Operation Acoustic Kitty”, a top-secret plan to turn a cat into a living, walking surveillance machine so the CIA could eavesdrop on private conversations.
The covert operation did not go well, and the cat ended up walking in front of a moving taxi.
3. They Can Manipulate Their Owner
Did you know that kitties can adapt their vocals to control your human behavior? For example, they can make their cries sound more urgent if they want food. Household cats exercise this control with a particular type of urgent-sounding, high-pitched meow.
4. A Cat’s Nose Shape is Like a Human Fingerprint
Cat’s noses are ridged in their unique way, much like a human fingerprint, and have their own little bumps and ridges. A cat’s “noseprints” are exclusive to each animal and can be used for identification, just like a human’s fingerprints.
5. Cat’s Have Paw Sweat
Cats have sweat glands too, but since their glands are covered in paw pad fur, sweat doesn’t cool them as effectively as it does for humans. You might be able to catch paw sweat from your cat on a really hot day if you see wet paw prints when they walk.
