Mother Tries Rescuing All Of Her Children From House Fire
A Texas woman died after she helped her two older children escape their burning home and then went back inside the blaze to try and save her infant son, according to local officials.
The mother and baby boy both died in the Saturday morning house fire at their Houston, Texas, residence, according to a statement from the House Fire Department (HFD).
According to the Houston Fire Department, the fire took place during the early morning hours at a house in a residential neighborhood just over 8 miles north of downtown.
Neighbors said they woke up to screaming, KHOU reported.
“I heard banging on the door and kids crying for help,” neighbor Savannah Hernandez told the station. “They are little kids, and you just never know what could happen. They were barefooted.”
The mother first rescued two older children from the home, who officials say were both under 10 years old, KTRK reported.
The woman re-entered the home to try and “rescue her 1-yr-old child from the flames,” but both died in the blaze, HFD Chief Samuel Peña said in a post on X. “Our prayers & condolences to the family🙏🏽,” the fire chief added.
No other injuries were reported, firefighters reported.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze, but photos from the scene show little remains of the home but charred wreckage.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, officials said.
