U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California has died at age 90.
The longtime senator had suffered from extensive health issues for more than a year, leading many to wonder about her fitness for office.
As of Friday morning, her cause of death was unclear.
The Democrat’s passing marks the end of a boundary-pushing political career that spanned more than half a century, studded with major legislative achievements on issues including gun control and the environment.
Feinstein planned to retire at the end of her term in 2024.
Her death leaves her powerful Senate seat vacant, requiring Gov. Gavin Newsom to appoint a temporary successor.
Dianne Feinstein was a long-serving Democratic U.S. senator from California and gun control advocate who spearheaded the first federal assault weapons ban and documented the CIA’s torture of foreign terrorism suspects.
Feinstein was present in the Senate on Wednesday and cast a vote at 11:45 a.m. ET, according to the congressional record.
